What should I do right after my phone gets wet?
Turn it off. Don't charge it. Bring it in as soon as you can. And skip the rice: it doesn't work, and charging a wet board causes more shorts.
Can you recover my data even if the phone won't turn on?
Often, yes. Even when the phone itself can't be saved, cleaning the board usually brings it back long enough to get your photos and files off.
Don't put it in rice
Rice is the best-known bad advice in phone repair. It soaks up a little moisture on the surface and does nothing about the corrosion and shorts already starting on the board. Phones that seem fine the next morning often die a few weeks later.
What to do instead
Get it out of the liquid and power it off completely. Don't charge it. Don't use a hair dryer. Don't keep pressing the power button. Current running through a wet board is what does the permanent damage. Then bring it to us, fast.
Coffee, pop and salt water are worse than plain water. They leave a residue that conducts electricity after it dries.
